Everything that Taylor Jenkins Reid writes is so so beautiful. Her characters are so intricately crafted, so perfectly flawed, and entirely human; it takes my breath away every time. I don't particularly enjoy tennis but this book was so incredibly engaging, I couldn't put it down. I absolutely adore how TJR truly understands her characters, what motivates them, and their truths (the ones they've admitted and the ones they haven't); it shines in the ways her characters interact and form relationships. Reading her writing is like reading art.

3.5 ⭐️ Things I liked: the relationship between Carrie and her dad, the character development seen in the last couple chapters as Carrie comes to terms with the possibility of losing, the subtle ties to TJR’s other books

Things I disliked: too much tennis play-by-play (I even play tennis and understood everything and it was still too much), Carrie wasn’t a very likable character which I’m sure is on purpose but that made it hard to root for her, and too many f-words for my personal taste

Taylor Jenkins Reid writes such compelling, fast-paced books -- I was both shocked and not shocked at all at how quickly I flew through this. Its "readability" is aided in part by what I think is a stronger second half, where the story seems to find its footing and Carrie is less an archetype and more a nuanced character (her relationship with her dad, especially, is beautifully developed). That said, I think the book's biggest pitfall is also one that's hard to avoid given the subject: making each match something new and something "alive."

All said, I will gladly continue to grab whatever Reid writes next, because again: compulsively, addictively readable!
