A cute book. I read this book after “Mistakes Were Made” which is probably Wilsner’s best book… so this one seemed a little lacking. A good story that was a fast easy read.

They went the whole book without even saying “Let’s give them something to talk about”? Come on

Going into this I was already unsure about it when the relationship is between an employee and her boss, but I guess I just had higher hopes about how they’d deal with this compared to how it actually happened. The thing is the two of them did not get to know each other at all outside of a work setting and the power imbalance between them never really settled down.
Also Jo liking being called boss was weird 😃

I feel like the two of them were working together for just so long while all this was going on and I can’t even really think of an alternative way for this plot to have been properly handled other than just taking these characters out of the same workplace.

I did however like the commentary on workplace sexual harassment, especially the extent to which it happens in the entertainment industry
and I wish that the book could’ve delved more into that in the end because Jo’s whole passion project concerning it was kind of just left unfinished.

The slow burn was too slow for my linking and I didn't really like the pov switching (or the narrator voices).

This didn’t really work for me. A lot of the reason why is in the blurb—reading this book made me realize that boss romances really aren’t for me. Going into this, I didn’t realize that there’s a significant age gap as well. The power imbalance just felt a little icky to me.

I also had a significant issue with the pacing. While I liked that this book took place over many months, it made how much of a slow burn this book is feel less realistic.
Especially as the focus is on them getting together and we don’t get to spend any time with them as a couple.
If you like slow burns, I might recommend this, as it’s one of the slowest burns I’ve read.
Their first (purposeful) kiss happens with like 2 chapters left in the book. However, the book ends with a full-blown sex scene, which I didn’t mind, but just felt out of place with how chaste the rest of the book was.

I read the iconic book that Meryl wrote in 2023 “mistakes were made” that had me clutching my pearls every 5 seconds because of how many times the characters jumped each other’s bones lol so this one was a bit more subdued and slow burn. The payoff is always the best part! Because you have all this pining and tension and it feels like it’s going to break and then it does a fake out where the character has seconds thoughts. It was so well done! And the way Jo admits in the beginning of the book that she’s in love with her assistant and doesn’t say something until like the second to last chapter or so was just cruel! It kept me hanging on tho!
