This annotated version is quite nice. It's amazing when you read how simple the original account was and how brilliantly Dumas expanded that into this novel.

3.5 stars, rounding up. There were any things I loved about this book. Many great lines, some solid and fun wit, charismatic characters, DRAMA, but ultimately I felt let down by the overarching plot. Especially after reading The Count of Monte Cristo earlier this year, this book just felt so much less mature. It was a great deal of fun with so much ridiculous drama, but not as stellar as CoMC to me.

The book is justifiably a classic. A gripping tale that sped by more rapidly than I would have expected. And it's amazing both how true to the story the various movies were and how much they softened the story as well. If you have not read this and enjoy the swashbuckling then you must read it. Now.

I actually listened to the audiobook read by Simon Vance. An excellent reader. He was able not only to give proper pacing and emotion to the tale but managed the dozen and a half or so characters, even the minor ones, with distinct voices and personalities. A masterful job!

I have to admit, after reading The Count of Monte Cristo, this story comes as more juvenile and underwhelming. But I see it as a great entrance into the Dumas' writings. If I was younger, I'd probably be more into the story. The action truly never stops. Characters are very colourful and distinctive. And it is somewhat refreshing seeing a woman as a main antagonist. However, it does leave wanting more of a development.
