When I started reading the book I was excited then my excitement flattened and I was dead set to give it a star and at moments to not finish it all. But I hate having books unfinished. I pushed through the book and somehow managed to finish it.
The only character I initially loved was James and it made me so happy that he had his happy custom made ending

Pretty simple writing, even for a middle reader. This could have been a great adult novel had Hoffman filled out the characters and story. It was a fast read though, so not unenjoyable.

Alice Hoffman wrote one of my favorite stories.

I was hoping that magic would strike again.
This is not a bad book though. Just an okay read for me. Maybe I'm too old for the target audience. It is a mid-grade book so that could explain the choppy short sentences and the jumping around in the story line.
I just got bored, but then I'm fully aware that I'm a jaded reader.

The town of Sidwell believes in magic. Flying monster men that steal little things from the townspeople.

Legends abound in the small town and when "the monster" starts leaving graffiti around the town the townspeople decide to go monster hunting.

Twig and her next door neighbor friend try and get to the bottom of the mystery and just failed at entertaining. By the end of the book..I just didn't care.

I love Alice Hoffman, and I read Practical Magic way too young for it to be relatable (but it was definitely enjoyable). If only Nightbird had come out when I was a kid!
In her typical fashion, Alice Hoffman paints a detailed, idyllic picture of rural New England, complete with descriptions of summer that put the warmth of the sun on my face (I say, having read this in February in MA). The story is full of quiet magic that's easy to believe in. The plot felt exactly as expected, but that's not a bad thing.
Nightbird was a uniquely nostalgic book for me. Even without a childhood spent believing in witches in New England, I think it'd still hold up.
