I made it about a third of the way through before DNF-ing it. I felt like it was going nowhere, all I had read about was that Laura had been expelled from school and her family apartment had leaks.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. For me it seemed like the magical realism was too sparse and aor of time was spent developing a character that didn't really go anywhere. There were a lot of plot points that seemed like they were kind of just thrown in and then not fully fleshed out. Like the death of the dad and the brother or her mom being sick.
I would have liked to see more time spent on her dealing with the predicament of a swan/boy coming into her life than her grandparents painting the house for Nonna's sister visit or the cooking of the seven fishes.
I thought there was some good detail around the actual swan boy, what he looked like, how he smelled etc that was good at making him both appealing and revolting at the same time. I think Maguire could have leaned into the romance a little more and that could have been interesting. Overall it was kind of just a meh book.
