What a beautiful book. While it's obviously a product of its time, I still found a lot of enjoyment in reading this story. The way George Eliot managed to capture the humanity of her contemporary human beings was so wonderful, it felt sort of like looking into a time capsule. I'm always pleasantly delighted whenever I remember that humans are humans, even all those years ago, and would have found the same things amusing or heartwarming.

George Eliot is normally one of my favorite writers, but I didn’t care for this one. It felt preachy and condescending, and it doesn’t have as much of the beautiful language I’m used to enjoying in her books.
