So, after a few years of having this on my shelf, I finally picked it up.

I should hate this book. It's full of murder, sex, rape, sex, people doing horrible things to each other... and more sex. This should not be a Julie book. But I really liked it. It's written well in that it flows smoothly and I found myself caring about the main characters despite all the horrible things they had done and were doing. They even get to redeem themselves a bit and by the end, I was rooting for them. I think it says a lot that the author was able to do that.

I'd recommend it to people who like a suspenseful read.

Engrossing , wicked and twisted but honestly not worth the raving reviews.

This would be a great book for a book club; I read it really fast, but when done wanted time to process it with others.

The last line the 2nd to last chapter: "It was just a story about despair." Pretty much sums it up.

I looked forward to reading this book after seeing it recommended on TV. So disappointing. I'd like to give it 1.5 stars only b/c I have books I hated more. So boring. The book made t0o many references to sex. I'm not being prude, the sex references were not explicit but sappy and well, unsexy. I agree with another review below, the word "Desire" was used far too much. I'm glad it was 200 pages and not 400...I wasted enough time on this book.

I read so many reviews praising this book, and it was even on the best-seller list (which I know really has no bearing on whether or not a book is actually good). The book I read and the book I thought I was going to read based on the summary on the jacket were two different books. I did not love this book, although I did finish it. A woman answers a personal ad for a wife and travels to a small Wisconsin town in the early 1900s to be married. Her plan is to slowly poison her wealthy husband so she can have all his money. Her new husband wants her to travel to St. Louis to bring back the son he hasn't seen in 14 years. But nobody in this book is really what they are pretending to be. There are some definite twists in the plot that are interesting, but they are way too bogged down in the constant descriptions of sex all the time.

This was a quick and enjoyable read. The characters had many secrets, which led to a certain level of mystery in the story that was enjoyable, but not torturous. I admit that there were parts of the story that there seems to be no real explanation for (which I won't discuss here, so as not to spoil it!) but overall, it was an interesting tale and I was satisfied at the outcome.

Eh. I just wanted someone to kill someone else and I didn't care who. Anybody? Bueller? Get with the murder you're clearly dangling in front of us, Goolrick! Just do it and let me move on to The Lonely Polygamist.
