That was.. just wow
Maybe it’s because I know he wrote it with a very personal note. But it felt really personal.. raw.. so full of emotion.. and yet still light hearted enough not to feel depressed whilst reading it.
Loved every bit of it…

TJ Klune has become my favorite author.

The writing is so pleasant and easy to get through while still being able to properly and accurately portray complex emotions.

The book deals with processing grief, and at times mentions the 5 stages of grief. The writing and the flow of the story made it so the reader felt exactly like the characters did at each stage, which I found fascinating.

This book actually made me cry towards the end, which has never happened before, so that's high praises coming from me.

I liked that this book talks about all different kinds of grief, rather than focusing on one way of feeling it.

Though this book is mainly about death and grief, it is not all depressing. Quite the opposite, actually. The book is full of hope and humor as well as fear.

The story structure of Under the Whispering Door is similar to The House in the Cerulean Sea.

Here's the thing about reading TJ Klune books. The setting is so cozy and the characters so heartfelt that if I read quickly enough, I don't catch how preachy it is. I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way, but both books that I've read are just so dang earnest. In this book I think the charming setting distracted me from the fact that
I didn't actually see Wallace's transformation from asshole to great guy, or believe his growing connection to Hugo (also I definitely clocked their ages as like, 65 and 29 at first since it wasn't made explicit, which complicated things 😆). For me, a lot of telling vs showing.
That said, I really enjoy how his books make me feel when I read them! So I'll probably definitely read more.
