finally got around to finishing this collection. kafka has such a way with words and i think im beginning to pick up on some of his quirks in prose in my own attempts of writing. this truly spiralled me into a hopeless romance phase. must read.

So interesting and insightful.
Even though we'll never be able to read Milena's letters, we learn so much about her and their relationship and, of course, Kafka himself. Knowing and understanding the author himself helps us better appreciate his work and I think we are very lucky to have this window into the mind of such an influential and important literary figure. While reading his letters, I've been annoyed at him at times but I've also been comforted by his words even though they were directed to another person. I've felt happiness for him but more than that, I've felt sorrow.
He and Milena share their many sufferings with each other and find understanding and compassion like no other. But this isn't a story. It's their entire relationship comprised of letters and as you read it you feel a type of dread because as Kafka professes his love for Milena in such ways he doesn't need to use the word 'love' at all you, as the reader, know that it all ends even before you turn the last page of the book. All the love they had for each other and everything they shared begins and ends with this book.

The passages written by Kafka here are beautiful, I don’t have much more to add besides what others have written here. Aside from what he repeats of her letters, I can only imagine what Milena was writing back.

"In a way, you are poetry material; You are full of cloudy subtleties I am willing to spend a lifetime figuring out. Words burst in your essence and you carry their dust in the pores of your ethereal individuality."

Oh to be Milena
