Hmm. Eh?

I liked the story a lot for most of it. Took a turn right at the end that made the ending fall flat, in my opinion.

That said, I think the characters facing intense personal and psychological consequences of being subjected to horrendous media day-in day-out is a type of realistic horror that I typically love.

Couldn't bring myself to rate it higher, couldn't bring myself to rate it lower.

I find the topic of the book very interesting, I like how it explored issues of desensitisation and trauma. I feel it could have been longer to fully explore the topics but I like how it was done.

While the premise of this book was interesting, the story felt incomplete. It had a lot of potential, but it didn't quite live up to it, in my opinion. The ending felt like it came out of nowhere. I would've liked for it to be longer, with more time and space to flesh out the characters.

While there is a lot of content warnings for this book, it’s a lot less graphic than what it seems to be made out to be when I saw reviews. It is primarily an insight on the effects of being desensitized/over-exposed to disturbing media online than about discussing the disturbing media.

I hate to say it, I didn’t love this book. I found some parts engaging but others a bit boring. It felt like a black mirror episode that was thrown out because it lost its original plot. I would have loved for them to go deeper about the harm the company causes the employees, instead we spent too much time on a toxic relationship. It had the outline to be great… but was not. The harmful language also did not do anything for the book. It was just for shock value.

At times I felt like it veered to far from the original settup of Kaylee talking to the lawyer (?), I had almost forgot about the lawsuit by the end because it ended up mostly focusing on the relationships between the characters. And maybe as a deliberate choice but I feel Kaylee’s relationship with her work isn’t actually explored that far.
Still very interesting, the characters aren’t good people which can be off putting but overall added to the vibe appropriately.

If you want a book about flawed narrators and the mess that is the internet, social media and inappropriate online content, this is for you.

If you want loveable characters, plots that come to a clear resolution or something that feels like more than an angry diatribe/character study, give this a miss
