It's a challenging book full of awful things happening on the Internet and the witness stress of those paid to review flagged posts and the hardships of that job, their coping.... Their fallout of beliefs from flat Earth to denying the Holocaust, the tiers of what most need taken down and what isn't is hard, the hopefully things they see, some described, is really hard to hear. Especially a young girl cutting her face before killing herself.. And how they take the cutting post down and find out about her suicide later because they can't stop thinking about the girl and remember her real name and investigate. Along in the story is the narrator trying to have a relationship with her girlfriend that goes through it's own hardships in parallel to the harshness of this job both women and their friends work at.

It's well written but full of so many trigger flags, most of not all of them.

i really liked this book, i'm so surprised by the reviews! personally, i don't mind an open ending and don't necessarily think it should have been wrapped up neatly. i also think it made sense for the main character and underscored how deeply her actions were impacted by the work she did (
having been confronted with her own acts of abuse against sigrid, kayleigh comes up with a "noble" gesture to make it up to her - going to the home of a young girl who had died by suicide, and whose video of self-harm had been reviewed by sigrid, and asking the parents to absolve sigrid of her inaction. kayleigh, unaware and delusional as ever, breaks in when she realizes they're not home. it's not until the end, when she's made her way to the girl's bedroom and hears the girls parents come home, that she has a moment of lucidity and asks herself what the hell she's doing.
).
i think it succeeded in showing and exploring how constantly being exposed to disturbing content and acting as the judge of what is acceptable impacts the characters' sense of morality - they're so desensitized to what they see, and so used to permitting offensive content, that they don't seem to recognize when they're enacting harm on others.
i can understand wishing the characters and story were more fleshed out, but i kind of liked how it felt like briefly peering into this secret world that none of us have access to - the format of it being written as a letter worked very well for this reason imo.
overall, i definitely recommend - read in two days and got me out of a reading slump!

The concept was so interesting. That was what made the book redeemable for me a bit. I understand that the author was trying to portray the harmful effects of such a job. However, this was not done well. I found it terribly hard to care about any of the characters because I hardly felt like I knew who any of them were. They weren’t flushed out well (to be fair though, this was a very short book). Some pieces felt unnecessarily convoluted and the ending was just… what? It wasn’t poetic or hard hitting, even with some reflection.. It just felt like a chunk of the book was missing.

Very abrupt ending. I definitely think more things could have been elaborated on and more details about the job could have been exposed. It was a gripping story but ultimately let me down.

ps. I wish I could read the book in its original language.

A pretty heavy read. I think it’s a good narrative on how what we see online really affects our behaviour in real life, hence we see how some of the characters change throughout the course of the book. It’s a short read - read it in a hour and a half. I would have liked a bit more exploration on the topic personally - because it’s so short I don’t think it’s as in depth as it could have been, but still a decent read.
