While there is a lot of content warnings for this book, it’s a lot less graphic than what it seems to be made out to be when I saw reviews. It is primarily an insight on the effects of being desensitized/over-exposed to disturbing media online than about discussing the disturbing media.

An interesting look at content moderators who review the worst things people put onto the internet, and how becoming desensitised to such content might affect their own sense of morality. The concept was super intriguing but the execution felt very rushed. There were a lot of different topics and themes covered that could have had more time spent on them, and the open ending felt anticlimactic and unfinished, like the author just didn’t know how to end the book.

the thing about this is, this was advertised to me as a fucked up horror, so i spent a good portion of this book waiting for something vaguely paranormal to happen. but as it turns out, it is an exploration of the effect which longer exposure to virtual violence might have on our psyche as well as a short look into unhealthy relationships. so I definitely was not prepared for this type of story and for me it was just depressive, i feel like some depictions of violence were unnecessary and thrown in for shock value, and the ending kind of felt abrupt. i usually love it when stories don't spell out everything for us and make us connect some things on our own, but this one felt like the whole fuss at the beginning was too much and the lawsuit was actually not connected to what the protagonist did. that being said, it is apparently based on real things that happened in similar work places and i don't want to go into spoilers so i just want to say if you want a story about how bleak people can get when exposed to terrible environment, this is a good meditative piece.

Blistering little novel about being a content moderator for a major social media platform. The workplace environment felt realistic to me, and the way the characters spiral into strange behaviours because of what they're seeing every day make sense to me (especially the way they find themselves talking about real world scenarios as if they're videos they're watching for work).
I docked a star because I think the ending was a bit silly - it would have been stronger ending on the parking lot scene with the phone.

This book was really good, it has a very shocking ending. I will say that I didn't particularly love the narrating style, it felt a little gimmicky. I do think the overall plot was excellent and the development of the characters was great. Made me feel queasy after I read it. Check the TWs for sure.
