A great beach read and another roller coaster ride of a book from Preston & Child.

A thriller that takes an unexpected plot twist . . . that's pretty much out there and weird. Still, it was entertaining and fits the genre.

The stilted dialogue and the way the main protagonist reacted to the side-kick were really strange.

Enjoyable, fast read, adventure book. Story far-fetched but still liked it.

I read Gideon Crew #1 years ago and hated it, and I've never tried another Gideon Crew again until now. As usual I perused the 1* reviews first and they were not good but I decided to give it a try anyway because I was out of other books to read.

Surprisingly, I really liked it. First of all, it was easy to read and follow. I could get into it right away despite the fact it's part of a series. Some books in a series are unreadable unless you start from the beginning and know the characters. Not this one.

Summary: Gideon Crew is given a partly deciphered treasure map and told to find the treasure at the end. He is paired with Amiko, a partner who apparently can do anything from captaining a boat to fighting.

A lot of people hated the book because it requires you to suspend credulity... a lot. But that's fine with me. You either accept the story or not and I chose to accept it. It's kind of a fantastical adventure yarn but that's ok even though I was just expecting a find-the-treasure adventure type book. (A little off topic but the first European explorer to S. America did say that he encountered a race of giants.)

Overall, I really enjoyed it. There was less treasure hunting than I expected and I thought the end was a bit overdone. I'm definitely going to try the other Gideon Crew stories and maybe even read #1 again.
