This was a pretty interesting one. I think this did a good job at presenting how often being an immigrant is not the only thing, that makes you different, as the main character was a great example of that. Also, the camp was a pretty interesting setting for presenting the entire situation with feeling like an outsider. Overall, this is great, really a recomended read.

Funny graphic novel about being away from home at camp! I learned some things about Russian culture and very much enjoyed that!

My main problem with this graphic novel was the green color.

Vera is a a nine-year old Russian girl who is just trying to fit in. Every summer all of her friends leave for camp and she's left at home with no one to play with. But when she finds out that there is a camp for Russians, she begs her mom to go and now she has something to look forward to. But when she gets to camp she realizes that it may not be for her. Her tent mates are kind of rude and she hasn't made friends with anyone. But she only has to be there for two weeks and she can go home. That is until her mom has a change of plans and now Vera has to stay the entire four weeks.

I was drawn to this graphic novel after seeing it on the Goodreads Choice Awards because the cover looks so cute. The art style is just the cutest that I've ever seen but unfortunately the story wasn't that interesting to me. It was cute and it's definitely geared towards middle grade but having never been to a camp, I just didn't see the appeal of going to a summer camp like Vera wanted to. But overall, the story was cute and somewhat enjoyable. I was disappointed in some of the decisions Vera made so that she could fit in with the other campers. But everyone makes mistakes and they learn from them.

I'm definitely considering checking out Vera Brosgol's other works because of the artwork alone. Even if the story doesn't sound appealing to you, I'd recommend this just for the art.

This was a decently interesting read. Vera is a young girl of Russian-Jewish descent, who is trying to find a place to fit I with her American schoolmates. In an attempt to be like the other girls, she pesters her mother to go to summer camp...only this summer camp isn’t at all what she expects. Are the girls there any better than the ones she knew from school?

This book takes the subject of bullying and deals with it in a way that feels very real. As someone who’s been bullied and left out, her experience hit very close to home and it was decidedly uncomfortable to go back through my own experiences via Vera. I felt for and with her as she navigates mean girls, camp rules, and cliques. I think everyone would be able to relate to that. She dealt with older girls, and buying friendship, and loneliness in a really heartfelt way.

Where it started to fall into the “meh” category for me was in the execution. I know that she’s nine years old, but the bathroom humor felt even more juvenile because it was largely out of place. Not many of the characters were likable, including at time Vera herself. It just felt as though it was missing something.

Overall the book was serviceable, while not memorable. I liked it well enough but wasn’t impressed as I thought I would be from the cover.
