It was good to finally after so many days finish a book in less than 24 hours, to read between my chores, to say "Shuck you" to homework for a day, to get lost with my favorite characters, to live a book.

So the fangirling rant begin!

This book lived up to my expectations and kind of exceeded them. The reviews I read were mixed and so I kept my expectations low. I didn't want disappointment knocking my door, I have had enough of that for a lifetime recently.

This book had the sarcasm! *emphasis on the* The writing was witty, captivating and had some pretty good jokes in it. Artemis being Artemis had the customary witty replies to almost everything.

There was loads of action. Sitting on my boring bed, in my boring home, with my boring siblings, but fortunately away from my boring school I had the exhilarating experience of diving completely into the world of Artemis Fowl. The action was definitely an escape and a good one at that!

This book has got a set of my favorite characters! Artemis (but we'll talk about him late on), Holly, Foaly and Butler.
Holly is an embodiment of bad-ass. The way she doesn't give a crap about rules and would sooner flush them in the toilet then obey them really excites me to read more of her.
Foaly for being a mastermind and showing it off. He is arrogant but in a nice way. Does that make any sort of sense? Probably not. For this to make sense you would have to read the books, if you haven't already.
Butler was a more complex character. You would think that he protected and looked out for Artemis so carefully because of the heavy pay he was receiving. But as the story proceeds, you can clearly tell he has a soft spot for Artemis and Artemis for him.

Artemis Fowl. Now I will be the first one to say that some things that Artemis have done are certainly not "legal", nor is he an angel of the Lord. What he is though is a mastermind like no other. He is one heck of criminal at age 12 and is feared. If that isn't goals I don't know what is. He is probably the last person who is going to show his emotions and thinks that nobody is deserving of his respect. That is until this book.
You see, the thing I always rant about plays a crucial role in this book; character development. Artemis not only got softer and more respectful towards certain people, he also was portrayed as vulnerable many times during the novel, making him seem "human". I have immense love for Artemis (who am i kidding, he is probably my biggest fictional crush) and so I loved the transformation from this book to the other.
Yes, I am a sucker for bad boys, do you mind?

We are back again with our favorite mud man and the people. During Artemis’s efforts to save a man that’s possibly his father, he gets wrapped up in the political drama of the fairies. This was a fun story that took you to different parts of the world (and under it), gave you more insight into the workings of the People and some more information on all the types of technology humans haven’t figured out yet.

I forgot how much I really enjoy these characters and all the random side comments on environmentalism. But even though I enjoyed the story, I think the pacing kind of threw me off throughout it. It took me a while to really get into it, and then when i did, it seemed like the pacing slowed again and I had to force myself to continue until it picked up.

So far, I've really enjoyed Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series. I've known it was around for a while, but slogged my way through some less interesting YA sludge before I finally decided to read these books on a co-worker's recommendation. I'll be the first to admit, it's not hugely intelligent like Harry Potter or hugely hormonal like the Twilight series, nor is it entirely original - taking its cues from the super villain and spy genres. But it's fun, fast-paced and refreshing.

One of the ways this book really works is the dichotomy between what is shown and what is told. While the narrator, a former caseworker, presents Artemis as a one-dimensional character - terming him a cold, unfeeling, criminal mastermind, ultimately his vulnerabilities are revealed through his actions. Yes, Artemis Fowl is a criminal mastermind, but he's also just a little boy. A delightful accompanying cast - including his loyal, well-trained brick-house of a bodyguard, a host of elves and fairies and no shortage of high-tech gizmos make this tale a fun, fast-paced read.

While I gave the first book five stars, I gave this book one less, purely because while it was a book about Artemis Fowl, he was actually featured very little. As the brain of the operation in a book mostly about brawn, Artemis took a sideline to less-interesting characters.

That aside, I would definitely recommend this book and series to both young adults and adults alike.

I can't believe I missed the Mr. Crocker reference while I was reading the first book and most of this one, my 12-year-old self is disappointed.

This book, where the fairies and Artemis collaborate, is much better even though when tried picking it up last year I barely read 5 pages before I dismissed it. I hate even the mention of cold weather.

I'll probably finish the whole series this year, but not right away.
