This book of immaculate illustrations is a gift for all ages. Echoing Love’s first book, Julián at the Wedding features warm brown pages and watercolor and gouache paintings. The result is much brighter and more detailed than Julián is a Mermaid, yet delicate, bright, and lovely, very much echoing the mood of a wedding. Love does incredible work portraying Black children- especially a boy- experiencing joy and employing creativity, a feature still rare and important in 2020. This book just so happens to include a lesbian wedding, but centers on the children’s play. The end papers are also happy to note- they are simply added illustrations. At its core, this book seems to be about Black joy: people simply existing and celebrating and loving one another. This will most likely be in the running for the Caldecott, due to the beautiful and very unique style of illustrations, coupled with the fact that one can fully understand the story without actually reading the words.

Read as part of Julián Stories on Libro.FM

These are incredible, fantastic, gorgeous picture books and this little duo of stories in audiobook form are just as wonderful. Complete with fun background music that compliments the stories, this is a fantastic addition to picture book storytelling but just as great to listened to alone.

The narration is thoughtfully done, with pauses of anticipation keeping the story engaging. The young mischief in both stories, alongside the wholehearted love and acceptance throughout these books make them a must have for any young ones.

Julián teaches us all that love is love and that it transcends all constrictive ideologies around gender. Julián and his grandmother are invited to a wedding. Here, Julián plays with a friend, Abuela while all the adults do what they do. However, Abulea's dress is muddied and she's concerned. Julián assuaged any fears by presenting her with a new dress that he crafts under the hidden branches of a willow and both return to the wedding to dance and celebrate.

Using the same techniques as her first outing, Love's story this time is far more adventurous with regards to presentation, frame, pace and form. A lovely story.

This book was really cute. There were barely any words and mostly pictures. It would be good to read with kids and talk about what it looks like is happening in the book.

Also, this book is lgbt friendly.

Another beautifully illustrated and magical story about Julián. This time he goes to a wedding where he meets Marisol, with whom he forms a friendship and has a glorious adventure. A lovely tale for both my heart and eyes.

Suitable for ages 4 to 8.
