oh my god! i loved this book so much, it’s hard to put into words just how much i loved it. it was exciting and thrilling and romantic and packed with adventure and mystery and i never expected what was going to happen next. i think it could easily be one of the best books i’ve ever read.

I liked the concept but wasn't the biggest fan of the writing/dialogue - felt a little too clichéd at times.

The protagonist was insufferable but the other characters boost him up constantly bc his self-esteem is at an all time low. It gets to a point where he either needs to take responsibility and become resilient on his own or just completely break down, but he seems stuck in this perpetual loop.

I've never seen a big twist ending reframe a book so well; the first three quarters it was fine, definite three star, definitely Stuff I'd picked up on, but the twist answered EVERY item that had stuck out to me, and the main twist was definitely really cool. I like how it changed the whole light of everything that had come before it.

That said there's still definitely Questions, getting close to the end made me think 'surely they need more pages to properly unpack this', and it's definitely a very YA-targeted book (if not middle grade? Maybe I'm too used to YA creep). But yeah, definitely I think it hinges on the twist and that part worked well!

I have so many thoughts - because the mystery element to this story had me soooooo hooked - there were continued twists that I absolutely did not expect and they were great....however... I also just didn't connect with the characters and due to the first half being so much slower than the second it just felt flat for a while. So all in all probably a 3.5 for me? What I will say is that this is not what I was expecting (in the best way) and now I have to go back and read the backlist by the author because I know everyone raves about him and I can see why.
