The kids say four stars though. We usually agree, but not this time.

This is a fun and hilarious book. I love the twisted comedy and the wonderful narrator. I do feel though that this is a book that is best consumed slowly. It is a very quick read but I found myself getting tired by some of the shtick. It is a great addition to our library and a great pick for those who love twisted and hilarious fairy tales.

Silly, and fun! The second story about Snow White was genuinely creepy but also gave me Nightvale vibes. So great for kids who liek ASOUE and other humorous and dark stories.

Um yeah. Not for me lmao. I do think it would be a good take on fairytales for young, YOUNG “scary” book loving readers. Lord i wanted to pull my freaking hair out reading this. Lol. Just yeah. I’m being generous AF with my Star Rating.

This was a buddy read with Destiny [link to her review to follow istg GR is pulling some real mindf*ckery] aaaand she DNF’d! Lmao. That def says a lot !

This is on the 2018 Lone Star list. I was not expecting to like it from the cover and description, but it was actually pretty good. It was an interesting mix of snarky and creepy. It consisted of about 8 stories all set in the traditional fairy tale land- but decidedly untraditional as they have a supernatural or horror twist. There is some gore and creepiness, but it is still pretty mild. I really think it’s more suited to upper elementary- so not sure about how popular this one will be.

This book was absolutely fantastic. It's basically all of my favorite things. Creative fairy tale retelling? Check. Zombies and other slightly spooky things? Check. A ton of grammar/spelling puns and word play? Check check check check check. Such a hilariously awesome read.

Going into it, I wasn't sure how "scary" it would book. "Hilarious scarytales" is a difficult term to figure out. For me, it was the perfect amount of scary. It was nice for a little creepiness, but I didn't have to sleep with the light on (but the closet door always remains firmly shut). The story isn't really scary or gory, it's more silly and gross in terms of bodily functions. It's appropriate for young readers as long as they're alright with the presence of zombies and vampires.

The narrations was hysterical. I loved all of the word play and breaking of the forth wall. The illustrations were fun and the font choices really worked with the story.

When I saw this was available at the library, I thought, "Do I really need to read another fairy tale retelling?" The mature answer was no, but I got it anyway. And I am so glad I did. This book is funny, creative, unique, and entertaining. One of the best fairy tale retellings I have read (which is saying a lot, because it's kind of my thing).

Highly recommend.

This was definitely one of those cases where I wasn't the target audience for this book and recognized that pretty quickly. I enjoy plenty of middle grade-aimed humor, but I don't think this sense of humor would have clicked with me even when I was a kid, and unfortunately, that's just how it goes with me and comedy books: it either works, or it doesn't (it usually doesn't), with no real in-between. 🤷‍♀️

Highly amusing darkly twisted fairy tales for middle grade readers. Readers are led through several fairy tales where the villains may be good, the previously thought of 'good' children may possibly be monstrous, and word usage is very important. Each chapter is a new story but parts carry though the whole book. Dark twists and turns keep readers on their toes.
Good for readers looking for dark and scary but not overly scary. I am wondering if younger readers will pick up on all of the jokes, but either way they should be amused.
Good for ages 9 and up.

It took a few chapters to really enter into the spirit of the wacky, twisted fairy tale retellings. By the end, I was enjoying the way they segued into one another, and the threads that ran through them - and I especially love how it ended. Recommended for kids who are smarter than their years and who's sense of humor is often a little dark.
