It's a shame that we can't really know - without speaking the language or being of the culture - all the nuance and subtleties present in this text. But I commend the effort. For the most part it's a charming tale full of tales of bravery and wonder.

It's the translation that make it a bit muddy to understand, even with the copious footnotes. But it is a blessing to have this tale at all, and to see parallels with other world mythologies is fascinating. A challenging, but fun treat if you're a mythology buff.

I enjoyed finally getting to read the Mwindo Epic (I read the version included in the Introduction to Mythology edited by Eva M. Thury and Margaret K. Devinney). It is fascinating to read literature from a very different tradition with its own tropes, and I would say it is a very rewarding experience. If you can find a copy, I would recommend reading/listening to the Mwindo Epic.
