Undset transports you to a different time beautifully, pulling the reader into a woman’s life throughout decades. Though at times slow, the book’s plot kept drawing me back in. In a re-read, I would more slowly contemplate the heavy religious themes in the book.

I love this book. I read it as a teenager and enjoyed it, but then I read it as an adult and was absolutely floored by it. Completely absorbing, strangely realistic for a novel written in the 1920's about the 1300's, and (to this reader at least, as a wife and a mother) hauntingly relatable. Worth rereading at every stage of life, I'd think.
