The murder of a school girl is the start of life unraveling for several people on this town. The mix of political and social commentary into the plot I find interesting - though not being from the southern US it's tricky to say how accurate it is. The paragraph where Caitlin talks about her altered racial views is hard to read.

I’m really struggling with Greg Iles. On one side, he gives me 5 star level suspense and a page turner that I can’t put down. On the other hand he gives me 1 star frustration at how he can’t seem to help himself from putting his foot in his mouth. So I averaged my rating out.

The second book in the series focuses on the murder of a teenage girl. The problem here is that Penn Cage would lead us to believe, through his constant actions and words, that is okay for someone to sleep with underage girls if it is truly love. His limited understanding of the power dynamic is appalling in someone who needs to remind us how educated and forward thinking they are. I read for the suspense, but know going into each book that Penn Cage is a poster boy of elitism that’s sometimes hard following without getting angry. I would be okay with this, if the character was supposed to be this way. Unfortunately, it’s obvious that Iles believe Cage to be a truly great man.

As a pharmacist, there was a scene that Cage’s father called “unethical” in which he went to the hospital pharmacy and took some OxyContin. I hated this because, as a hospital pharmacist, doctors don’t have access to the pharmacy and what Dr. Cage does wasn’t just “unethical,” it’s illegal, would result in him losing his license, and be considered a federal drug offense.

Good holiday read, kept me occupied on a long bumpy flight anyway! Can not imagine finding out something about a friend and as time goes by finding out more and more that puts them in the frame for murder. Will read more by this author.

Excellent writing and a fast-paced story. But the subject matter was disturbing and the backstory horrific. Looking for something lighter for my next read.

I really enjoyed this novel even though the subject matter was a little intense. I found myself really caring what happened to the characters and read the last half of the book in one sitting. I love how Iles describes things like the settings and characters. I can't wait to get started on the next book in the series.

Some of the characters were almost caricatures of themselves, and the whole dirty old man and panting hot teenage girl thing was just eye-rollingly ridiculous at times (the writer writing out his fantasies maybe?), but I can't give it less than 3 stars because, despite its flaws, I ENJOYED it! Except for the 'no, really? Too obvious!' ending.
