Li-yan and her family’s lives revolve around tea, and they farm certain types throughout the year. Then, Li-yan has a baby, whom she names Haley, out of wedlock and abandons her. While the two of them are separated, Haley grows up as a privileged California girl, but always wonders about her roots and Li-yan longs for the daughter she gave up so long ago. Will the two of them reunite or be separated forever?

i enjoyed reading this. the culture was very interesting and its even better than lady tan‘s circle of women. idk why but something about this author always has me focused as fuck while reading her books lmao

quotes <3

-

I love my a-ma and I’m grateful she saved my friend, but I’m still struggling. I look around the grove and see not health and cures but superstition and traditions that hurt people.

-

I must attend the festivities, but they are heartbreaking for me. Not so long ago, A-ma and A-ba intended this joyousness for me.

-

I won’t allow them to see me ache. I won’t allow them to see me suffer.

Amazing read, loved the cultural insights provided. It's hard to imagine that life was so different for girls my age growing up in different countries during the same time frame. The ending was a bit of a letdown but still worth the read.
