“I’m starting to suspect that werewolves can’t get drunk, which just might be the most unfortunate part about all this.”

What a banger of a book! The main character, Rory, is hilarious, even if I did find myself yelling at her every now and then. Actually, I found myself yelling at all of them. I totally get the rage.

Even better was that this was not your typical “sexy werewolf” story. It was gross, bloody, and real, kinda like having female parts.

Definitely in my top books this year!

I picked up this book as a light-hearted horror read for Halloween, expecting the level of cheesy romance and comedy found in a YA romance novel, but I actually got a lot more than that, and it clearly has an older target audience. This book is cinematic in it's gore and supernatural descriptions. There are some comedy moments, some uncomfortably cheesy lines, but ultimately this book was powerful. Moving descriptions of toxic families, traumatic pasts, new families, and a fast-paced plot with many unpredictable twists. This story has a lot to offer, and is perfect for anyone looking for an adult horror with a sprinkling of romance on top.

Not at all what I expected, but in a good way. A sort of romance novel. But also about processing childhood trauma and its impact on adult relationships. Oh and also about becoming a werewolf. And somehow it worked. Recommended if you're in the mood for a spooky season theme but not a horror/thriller type.

Not as much of a horror book as it
is a supernatural drama, it still is an engaging read about the how internalized rage and trauma can manifest decades later, and at the most inopportune time.

I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley but all thoughts are my own.

I was very excited to read Such Sharp Teeth as I absolutely loved Rachel Harrison's previous book Cackle. Unfortunately it didn't quite have the same impact on me.

The book follows Rory as she tries to navigate lycanthropy, moving back home to help her sister and dating her former highschool friend.

I felt like this book was simultaneously exactly what I expected and not which made for a bit of a weird reading experience. I really enjoyed the journey that Rory was going through and how it impacted her on top of all the other things she was dealing with. However, I felt like most of the other characters were a bit underdeveloped. Everyone has a lot going on and I feel like Rory just kind of blows them off so we never really get to know them except when it's relavent to the story. I also didn't really feel the chemistry between her and Iain. Most of their history was pre-book so it felt like I just had to assume it was there, even though Rory didn't like him in school. I don't know, it just didn't do it for me.

I also felt that the pacing was a bit off. I think that is probably to do with the side characters not really having a moment until it was relavent. Or at least that's how it felt to me.

I feel like I've got a lot of criticisms but honestly I did enjoy this. I kept reading because I was invested in Rory and I do think this is good if you want some low stakes casual horror.

A solid horror story. The description is pretty accurate to what the whole book is about. It was interesting to read how the whole "werewolf" thing was used as a vehicle for female rage- especially to heavy trauma. I did end up liking the MC, she is easy to root for and all I wanted to give her was a hug (even though she would probably beat me up). It was also interesting that "werewolf" as also used to describe not being in control of your body, similar to how the sister's pregnancy was talked about throughout the book. Overall, it was solid.

Thank you, Berkley Publishing, for the gifted copy of Such Sharp Teeth {partner}

Genre: Horror/Fantasy
Trope: Werewolves
Format: 📖
Pub Date: 10.4.2022
Star Rating: ☆☆☆☆

"My strength doesn't come from the bad things that have happened to me. It defies those things."

Such Sharp Teeth is my first novel from author Rachel Harrison, and it will certainly not be my last.

Yes, this book is categorized as 'horror,' but in my opinion, I'd classify it as fantasy first and then maybe horror. There were some graphic (or gross) mentions throughout the book, but it didn't feel too over the top. Such Sharp Teeth felt relatively tame for a werewolf story.

I loved the characters in this book; I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between Rory and her sister, Scarlett. I'm often irritated with twin sisters as MCs in books because it can become somewhat annoying. But, the bond between Scarlet and Rory felt very real, and I savored every bit of their dark humor.

Besides the classic girl getting bitten by the beast and becoming a werewolf part of the story, the author brought several heavy topics into the storyline - sexual abuse, prepartum depression, parental neglect, and just what forgiveness might look like. Whew, pretty heavy stuff for a werewolf book, right? I wasn't prepared to have all these emotions while reading, but I did, and I can't complain. As I read through Such Sharp Teeth, I had to let go of how I 'thought' a character should act or what I 'thought' a character should say and instead focus on the dual perspectives that were brought into the book.

My only complaint is after all the author packed into this story, I thought it ended quickly and perfectly. After all the depth and character growth, I just needed something a little more from the ending.

😈 Dark humor
👯‍♀️ Twin sisters with parallel problems (very well done, IMO)
🥰 A tiny bit of romance
✨ More fantasy than horror
🥺 Underlying storyline on trauma
💨 Quick ending

❌ sexual abuse, parental neglect, prepartum depression

If you're looking for one last book to sneak into your 'books of October' stack, I suggest grabbing Such Sharp Teeth. It's a quick read and wasn't overly horrific (if that's why you've been avoiding it).
