If I could have given this no stars I would have. I generally really like Atwood’s writing but this is awful. Some of the other one star reviews sum it up nicely so I’m not going into a ton of detail. The main impression I got was she thought graphic novels are something she hadn’t done before and She read comics as a kid, and thought how hard could something as simple as comics be.

Unfortunately, because a friend is reading them and wanted my impression I’m going to read all three books. I do not have high hopes for things to improve The only good part is that they are short and a quick read and I’m not wasting too much time.

This was a huge disappointment. The overall plot was fine, in that super ridiculous comic book sort of way, but the pacing and dialogue were cringe worthy, and I feel like it couldn't decide if it wanted to be an all-ages educational book or an adult story. It failed at both.

I've loved all the Atwood I've read so far, but this was a little... off? As a long time cat & fantasy/sci-fi lover I feel like this a story I've seen before. But it's only book 1 and I'm more than willing to give Atwood a few chances to get it right in a new genre. Staying tuned for the next trade.

Everything just felt horridly awkward-- the dialogue, the names, the transformation-- it was like reading an early 1930s comic trying to be a 1990s comic but actually written in the 2010s.

What even was this? I don't think this comic knows what it's supposed to be. A retro throwback comic? A vanity piece? A PSA about cats and birds? A steaming hot mess? I love graphic novels, and seeing Margaret Atwood's name on this, I expected greatness. Such disappointment. I should have known when she started out her intro calling herself a "nice literary old lady" that she was going to fuck this comic up big time. In fact I probably should have known from how she's tried to deny that she writes science-fiction that she would have zero respect for something that wasn't "literary" enough for her. This is just one big steaming pile of fail that I would not recommend to anybody. The dialogue is painful, the characters are a joke, there are random cat PSA's shoved in awkwardly, and the art does nothing to make up for it. There is no redeeming aspect of this. None.

Okay, here's the thing.
If you pick up this comic expecting it to have the emotional gravitas and depth of most of Margaret Atwood's work, you're going to be disappointed. I completely understand all the low reviews.
But that's not the point of this story. This story is *fun*. It's silly and it doesn't make much sense. The main character falls in love with a woman he's literally spoken like 6 words to. It's absolutely ridiculous, and I love it.

Well this was retro. Unfunny puns and cat factoids aside, the story was so basic I can't imagine anyone but Atwood could have gotten it published. Maybe if you're a cat person...? No, still wouldn't recommend it. Two stars because I liked the art and Count Catula.

My daughter read it right after me--a great way to introduce her to Margaret Atwood. My daughter loved the cat puns.
