I was drawn to this book because I love a good rom-com! I had no idea it was Lily Menon's first venture out of YA - I definitely need to check out her other books. I did fall in love with all of the characters but I wanted more to the story. Annika and Hudson's rivalry was perfectly approached and often cringeworthy in the best way! I wanted more background on how they met and the ending felt rushed so I would have loved an epilogue. It was a fun, quick read and I would recommend it to friends!

I'll start by saving this. I LOVE MENON'S YA NOVELS!!

This is Menon's debut adult romance novel and it was NOT bad but it is NOT super steamy. There's LOTS of sexual tension & slow burn but not a lot of ACTUAL sex scenes.

If you're venturing into romance for the 1st time OR you like a more tame romance, this is for you. If you want a rated R romance with smutty sex in every other chapter, pass on this.

Two rivals with a steamy history are brought together once again when Hudson CEO of the rising Break Up App moves into the office next door to Annika CEO of the struggling Make Up App. Annika isn’t only envious of Hudson’s success she angry; you would be too if your summer fling stole your idea.

Annika believes in love and wants to give couples a second chance at love with her app. Annika and Make Up are running out of money and desperately need an influx of cash that would come from winning the EPIC Pitch contest. The problem though is she has some tough competition. Not only is Break Up on the rise and being featured in prestigious magazines and speaking engagements they are also competing at the EPIC Pitch contest.

This book reminded me of You Deserve each other by Sarah Hogle but more on the tame side. I loved the dynamic of the two main characters, especially the way it progressed and evolved towards the end of the book. Sabotage is talked about quite a bit throughout the book leading up to the contest and the “sabotage’’ that does take place was kind of disappointing.

There are the cliches we see often in Romance books but I enjoyed the dynamics between all the characters including Annika and her friend June. The one thing I really didn’t like about the book was the ending, with the scale of drama that came at the end it just wrapped up to quick and easy for me.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for sharing this ARC with me in exchange my honest review.

I found my heart flutter each time Annika and Hudson interact. It’s so obvious what misunderstanding had happened right away. This blatant fact made the anticipation almost torturous. Usually I enjoy figuring out what had happened slowly as the book unfolds. It almost feels like a spoiler, but this approach had me speed reading to figure out when they would figure it out so they can finally “make up”.

Maybe it’s the competitive nature in me, but a win isn’t a win if the competition withdraws.
