This book does it all - provides inviting and relatable insights into what therapy is like, humanizes providers and clients and the vulnerability of each, and is deeply moving in portraying the human experience. Relatable, lovely, and hopeful.

I loved this book so much I recommended it to my own therapist…

The stories are brilliantly woven together - Lori as patient, Lori as therapist, and the (anonymized) stories of her patients. All experience major growth and a true character arc through their vulnerability.

The book also shows how vulnerability  is a muscle; we can’t be honest with others until we learn how to be honest with ourselves.

Also enjoyed the memoir elements about the author’s career changes and major life choices, and how those choices informed her present self.

Highly recommend and would re-read.

This book took me a while to get through. There were some triggers in it for me that made it difficult to pick up depending on the mood I was in, which, is okay. It addressed these triggers in a really healthy and meaningful way and even though there were many tears, I’m glad I read through these hard parts. This book makes me frustrated that mental health care is not more available to people in Canada, especially me. I don’t have coverage for extended therapy, which I would absolutely benefit from (as would most other people!!). It made me appreciate the relationship between therapist and patient so much more reading about how a therapist interacted with her own therapist. I recommend this book to anyone.

I recommend this book to almost everyone but especially if you have an interest in mental health or if you have ever been through trauma that made you consider therapy. I recommend this to people who work in therapy social work or healthcare. It starts off slow and you may say “why do I care about this” but when the author starts drawing parallels between her experiences with that of her patients and experiences with her therapist it’s very interesting and enlightening.

This was a beautiful story about a therapist whose patients were all going through something difficult, while she herself was also going through something difficult and seeing her own therapist about it. In the end, all the stories came together beautifully. The stories were sometimes heartbreaking, but it was inspiring to see the patients grow/recover/accept/learn to love again. Ultimately, this book was about human connection and growth, mixed with interesting insights and psychology facts.
