A published book belongs to the author just as much if not more than to the public. It’s clear to me that Sarah Broom comes to terms with her sense of place by writing about and during her exploration of it. This book needs a very close-read and you might even want to draw diagrams  to help you follow along with her words. If you don’t, you may lose track of the story,  the characters, and the setting. This books is not intended for a light-hearted read. Sarah Broom may have written a short book, but simply looking at the length will not capture the depth of her explorations and words. This book took me a while to get through, but I finished and I’m excited to read it again and again and again. I had to look up a lot of things she mentions, but every second of my outside research and close-reading was worth it. I am forever changed by this book. This book is not for the faint-hearted either. There are a lot of content warnings. I don’t know if I mentioned every single one. Do a lot of research on the content-warnings if you have triggers. There’s no gore, but enough had to be said for the injustices that lower-income Black communities in America face every day.

Extremely powerful and educational memoir. Writing style was beautiful, if a little dense at times.
