I couldn't finish this. It was depressing, weird, and confusing. Sometimes those are good qualities, but not in this case. I kept reading to see if it would start to make some kind of sense, or turn it around, but I gave up 20% in.

An actual GREAT story, instead of the typical "drawn by geniuses/written by children" graphic novel.

I taught this book when I taught Contemporary Literature in college. You would not believe how many students thought they were reading the most complex text since Shakespeare. For me, it will always be one of my favorite books--graphic or otherwise. The story of Jimmy Corrigan and the generations that came before him is enhanced by Ware's artwork; from his repetition of panels of minute detail to his grandiose scenes at the first World's Fair in Chicago.

There are times when it gets bogged down by its own melancholia; Jimmy Corrigan is not a happy tale, per se. But it is one with resonance and visceral images that will keep you company in late hours when all seems hopeless.

This might be the most depressing thing I've ever read....but I couldn't take my eyes away. This speaks to the hero we all long to be.

I don't really care for graphic novels - it's not that i particularly dislike them, but i do not think about picking one out as the next to read. This was recommended to me by a friend whose judgment i trust and it was one of the most effective, incredibly sad and real books i've ever read. The drawings contained all the emotions and it really conveyed all that a novel could without using so many words(maybe even more). It is exceptional.

I gave up on this at first, because it required far more use of my brain than I was expecting. But I'm glad I came back to it- it's depressing, it's sad, but it's incredibly well-made and Chris Ware is an amazing storyteller. Definitely a graphic novel of substance.
