I approached this book warily, not sure what I was getting myself into, and wondering if my perception of it would be clouded by the fact that I know someone close to the author. Maybe it did. But I don't think so. I think this book was surprising, perfectly paced, with compelling characters, and a truly interesting and well-conceived world that didn't have me looking for loopholes or plotholes. I was just along for the ride from the start, all the way through to the building climax and resolution. I do wish there had been more of Maska and Osu, but overall it was truly enjoyable.
