Suddenly One Summer
4 Stars

In the aftermath of a home invasion, divorce attorney Victoria Slade moves into a new place only to discover an unwanted attraction to her gorgeous yet annoying neighbor, Ford Dixon. Despite getting off on the wrong foot, Victoria agrees to help Dixon's younger sister locate the man who left her alone and pregnant. While working together, Victoria and Ford realize that they have more in common than meets the eye, but is it enough for a lasting relationship?

Books containing more than one plot thread are often problematic as the various storylines fail to form a cohesive whole. Thankfully, this is not the case here as the three threads (Victoria and Ford's romance, Victoria's PTSD and Ford's sister) are each well-developed and seamlessly interwoven.

Victoria and Ford are an engaging couple with wonderfully witty banter and excellent chemistry. Victoria's panic disorder and therapy sessions are portrayed realistically and add important nuance to her character and understanding her issues with commitment.

Ford is a charming rogue with issues of his own, but his love and affection for his sister and niece as well as is determination to win Victoria more than compensate for any of his shortcomings.

All in all, a lovely read for a rainy day.

Might be my least favorite Julie James book, but still really good. Full review to come.

A romance novel/beach read - in the category of hallmark Christmas movies. Both can be enjoyable when needing serious escapism :-)

Victoria, a successful divorce lawyer, has her first panic attack while hiding from burglars in her closet. Because she can no longer sleep at that place, she sublets a condo for the summer.

Victoria's new neighbor, Ford, just lost his alcoholic father. Ford's sister is looking for her baby's daddy, giving the investigative journalist and the divorce lawyer a reason to team up to find the man.

Sparks fly between Ford and Victoria from the beginning. Both have relationship issues. Victoria is diagnosed with panic disorder and secretly begins seeing a cognitive behavior therapist. However, she doesn't want any of her friends to know she is seeing the therapist or that she has "issues."

At times, this book is incredibly funny. It also has a realistic, sweet ending.

This was my least favorite if the group. Loved their banter as usual. It it seemed to drag in the middle.

Victoria Slade: Oh, I'm a classic Julie James' damsel-in-distress but really I'm a strong, capable, dedicated, witty, funny, sexy, smart and elegant woman. And I have mommy issues, I have panic disorder. Oh, and I think my neighbor is a jerk, but he's oh-so-hot and yummy! Definitely gonna bang him.

Ford Dixon: I'm good-looking, I'm smart, I work hard, I'm a chick-magnet. I have daddy issues. I think my neighbor sucks, but she's damn fine. Definitely gonna bang her.

I liked this, but not nearly as much as the rest of the FBI/US Attorney series. There was nothing particularly wrong with it, but it just didn't seem to have the same spark as those books for some reason.
