I listened to the audiobook and while I enjoyed it, I wasn't blown away.
It is the story of a young girl who loses her Mom, and engages in a secret romance with the preacher's son. Years later, their stories intertwine again. Chapters are broken up by reminisces by "The Mothers", a group of women who preside over the church and discuss their interpretations and sometimes judgments on the congregation.
It is well written, and I liked the reader, but I also wasn't super hooked.

Well written but I didn’t find enough to love in the central character and I remember getting a bit frustrated that they didn’t just talk about it all sooner - which obviously runs counter to the concept of a Big Secret at the heart of the novel.

Jul 1, 2017: I really liked this novel. Brit Bennett is a fantastic writer and fills the novel with great descriptions and one-liners. Her characters have a lot of depth, and my heart goes out to the three protagonists. The story is emotional and insightful.

This author is brilliant. The movement of time through her stories are steady and coursing as a river. Beautiful. Raw. Familiar.

Suicide, abortion, adultery and, through it all, intense and immense loneliness. A very good book, just incredibly sad.

I honestly give this one 3.5 stars. Bennett is a beautiful and unique writer. The story was complex and nuanced, yet the ending felt rushed and incomplete.

This is a deep dive into human relationships and the things that humans will do to save face. Descriptive story telling... although I found the outcome to be predictable and some of the storyline to reach it unlikely. I still enjoyed it!
