Uhh I DNF'ed this one. Just not really feeling Thorne - I like stoic characters but he's just too stoic for me. Also didn't care about the whole new family cast.

I LOVED this book! I really felt for Kate and Thorne and really loved watching them find their way to one another. I adored how Thorne cared for Kate, Badger and seeing the people from the other books! This book brought me so much happy!

I'm sad that I didn't enjoy this book. I generally really like Tessa Dare but I just found this one boring. Neither of the main characters are especially interesting and I didn't feel they had any real connection between them.

I've heard such mixed reviews on this book, that I truly didn't know what to expect. Well those stars should tell you that I loved this book. I had a feeling that there was some connection between Corporal Thorne and Miss Taylor from the start, but couldn't pinpoint exactly what. I loved that I got to learn what that was along with Kate - by the time she found all out, I'd figured that it was something along those lines, but her reaction to the reveal was excellent. I felt for her to have to make the decision that she does and then convince everyone involved that she does know her mind and is serious about it all - and to have all of Spindle Cove conspire to help her was magnificent. If anyone deserves an HEA, it's Kate and Samuel. *happy sigh*

It lagged quite a bit in the middle. Larger cast but suffers from it - don’t really get a sense of both the main characters.

I’m not a fan of repressed memory or hidden identity storylines, so this book was never going to be for me. But I’m nonetheless disappointed that I didn’t love it more. (I just thought Tessa Dare might be the exception, y’know?)

I enjoyed the setup and the grumpy x sunshine dynamic, but I began to rapidly lose interest around the 40% mark. I didn’t find these characters terribly interesting, wasn’t invested in their relationship, and didn’t caaaaaare about the mysterious Gramercy back story. It wasn’t as funny as other Tessa Dare books and there wasn’t a whole lot that actually happened.

This would’ve been a 3 star read were it not for the conflict and ending, which pissed me the fuck off.
Spoiler Thorne and the cousin start swinging their dicks around, and in the process, *completely* take away Katie’s sense of agency. Which is forgiven instantly. And another character makes a huge admission of guilt. Which is forgiven instantly. It made me *so* mad and yet Katie didn’t seem to give a shit.

I just can’t root for a doormat heroine like this. Not every heroine has to be railing against the conventions of the time, but at least show some of the “fire” the characters claim that you have?!!! Give me a Beverly Jenkins heroine instead who would’ve just shot them in the shoulder to teach them a lesson!

And as for Thorne, MY GOD were his PTSD and self-esteem issues handled poorly. Show me the dude working on himself and trying to heal within the parameters of the time. Don’t just show me a girl talking him down from Hulking out, and going “lol it’ll be fine in a couple years”. This man’s pride, stupidity, and self-esteem were unbearable.

I would’ve liked this more if he’d just fucked off to Indiana alone, and the cousin got shot in the face.
