This was a really good book. Our unnamed narrator decides to take a year off to strictly sleep in hopes that she will wake up feeling new, refreshed, inspired, and free. The book takes us on a wild ride of our narrators past, her complicated friendship with her best friend Reva, her toxic relationship with Trevor, her horrible and peculiar psychiatrist Dr. Tuttle, and her own toxicity and selfishness. I enjoyed getting to know all the deepest and darkest secrets of our narrator and everything that is so wrong about her. That’s what makes it funny in my opinion! She’s completely unhinged and her drug induced year of rest had me gripped.

The protagonist, as with the author’s other book Eileen, is resentful and bitter, but her unlikableness is balanced by her sharp wit and humor. Her dark and idiosyncratic view of life, along with the periods of piecing together things she has done but can’t remember, is reminiscent of Fight Club. The tone, nihilism with an edge of hope, is similar too. Overall this book is interesting, unique and worthwhile if you can go along for the ride.

One of those books where nothing really happens but found the writing very fun and bold to read ! Basically … hot girls, they have problems too.

I found this book utterly compelling. The main character made me feel incredibly uncomfortable but I also really related to her. Moshfegh has a huge talent for mining the depths of human ugliness in a way that feels revolting and completely understandable. And the way the book ends? Shocking, predictable and still weirdly hopeful. I loved this.
