What a waste of an interesting concept. The way the narrator talks about his daughter is downright creepy. So much unnecessary description. We don’t need to know what every unimportant, three-page character looks like ffs. They should use this in writing classes to emphasize why “show don’t tell” makes for a better story.

A bit disappointing compared to her other books. Several very unlikely plot twists and way fewer strong female characters.

The first half of the book was riveting. I was at the edge of my seat…and then the plot took some tortured turns. Overall, an enjoyable escape of a read with some interesting characters, but the plotting left something to be desired.

A family is driving in their family car when they are car jacked and the daughter is killed. The family learns that the car jackers were a part of a large drug gang. The family is put into witness protection. The dad learns that his wife was having an affair with a high powered attorney that represented the drug gang. At the same time they learn that the man who pulled the trigger, Milo, was working with the FBI to flip on the gang. The FBI hadn't told the family so the dad decides to go rogue. He meets the head of the gang, George. He meets with Milo and after a gun fight he runs. He is picked up by the FBI agent that was protecting his family and realizes that this agent is working with the gang. He escapes and is is framed for the murder of the agent but now the FBI is looking for him. He learns that a senator who wants to run for president is the man pulling the strings. He doesn't want a story to come out about gitmo. And the dad was in a photo with the senator at a time he said he was in the infirmary. A loyal FBI agent along with his family helps him to kill Milo and later the senator is brought to justice. A bit confusing of a storyline but interesting.

I received a copy of this novel in a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for my honest review.
2.5 mediocre stars.

I will start off by stating that this is not my typical genre and this book did nothing to make me change my decision on that matter. I tend to shy away from any fast paced FBI/CIA/Police based stuff as it is always a little too far fetched for me. With that being said, this one actually got off to a pretty good and engaging start when the cookie cutter family of mom, dad, boy child and girl child are on their way home one evening when they are harassed and tailgated by another vehicle. Two men end up blocking their car and shooter kills the daughter, Allison, but then turns the gun on his partner and kills him as well.
The remaining family members are told they need to enter the witness protection program. As a reader, something feels off and well, it is a novel with a lot of pages left so you know something is going to be off. Despite this event being one of the most traumatizing things I think a person could go through, we aren't here to deal with trauma. Something sinister is going on and we need to figure out what. There is a lot to think about and try to figure out, but I guess I felt like a lot of the emotion that would emerge in a situation like this was left out. I didn't get to feel things, instead I'm told them. I'm told the male child is struggling but I don't get to see his struggle. There's talk of getting him into therapy but there is no urgency. I don't feel a couple grieving, but I'm told they are. But again, this is a typical thriller trait in my opinion.
Then the dad, Jason, becomes superman. Things emerge about his wife that shock him, but the emotions that would generally emerge take a back seat because Jason is out to vindicate his daughter. He's going to get to the bottom of what is going on, sometimes by leaps and bounds and connections that seemed a little too big.
There are chases, there are lies, there are good guys, there are bad guys. If this is your thing, it is fast paced and will keep you guessing. If you like to get all the feels and emotions of your characters, I'd say it's a pass.
