I loved this book! Refreshing read with two main characters that are dynamic, and layered with actual flaws! The writing is so descriptive and beautiful it feels like I’m walking along with them in the world.

The book is set in 1910s United States in a fictional agricultural small town with two sisters that are trying to navigate the difficulties of being a woman living in the pre 19th amendments era when you can’t have a bank account, vote, or even get a divorce . I really love the dynamics between the sisters and getting an insight into both of their minds and how they communicate and what makes them irritated or upset with the other bc I have sisters and I really connected to that. One minute your friends and the next you say one thing and you could be fighting lol.

The fae bargaining is sprinkled in so wonderfully to make it fun but to not take away the seriousness of both women’s struggles. The fairies are a subtle part of the beginning of the story and become a main part of the end. It’s refreshing to be involved with fae that are mysterious and dangerous and make you uncomfortable rather than the typical romantsy sexy fae thing going on. The fae world is beautiful yet strange and scary and it’s not a place you want to be even if it’s beautiful.
Loved it 5 stars!! Best read of the summer.

This was a rough one to get through but I don’t know why. It was fun, interesting, well written - the topic should have grabbed me….maybe the characters weren’t engaging enough?

This book exceeded all of my expectations. It was the perfect blend of historical fiction and fantasy and set in early 1900s America. It had a little bit of a slow start, but I was fully engaged and invested in this family's fate through the bargains they made, as well as the fate of the fae world. Loved the use of Ida's character and her research to connect the fae stories with legends and cultures around the world. Loved this story so much!
