I'm always a bit wary of reading anything set in Scotland. As a Scot sometimes the language and accent written by non Scots ends up a bit comedy Irish rather than Scots but since this was by one of my fave authors I decided to brave it!!!!

I was not disappointed. Ms Danann has written another corker of a book, which althought set in the Order of the Black Swan dimension and has a couple of blink and you'll miss it cameos from characters from the series, this book is perfectly at home on its own.

Liulf if your typical dour Scotsman and an alpha to boot. He is not keen on leading his people but on the death of his uncle he is forced to take up the manteau. On meeting his mate he is taken aback by her refusal to even be alone with him. In her defence Rain is only 50!!! and a baby compared to Liulf couple of centuries. The story is well crafted and romantic heat is a nice simmer!!!!

I'm counting this as read because I'm not going to return to it. The number of complaints I have this book are pretty high, but I think the worst thing about it is the names. Everyone's name is either unpronounceable unless you're Scottish, or a noun like 'wind' or 'rock'. It's ridiculous and sometimes hard to tell if you're talking about a person or a geographical feature.

Other complaints include: very poor world building, no character development, some sort of weird dimensional set-up that is very poorly explained, and no real conflict.

I don't tend to have high standards for these kinds of books, but this one was just too confusing and not engaging.

So... bleh.

MINOR SPOILERS

This is my first read from author Victoria Danann. My first impression is that she writes an awesome accent. I loved it but I did have minor trouble understanding some of their word meanings at first but I was able to get the gist of the meanings through context. Once I figured that out, it was smooth sailing. I had no trouble imagining their voices since they flowed pretty well in my head.

This is a pretty quick read for me. I liked this novella because it was written in a decent manner and I did not tired of reading so it kept up at a good pace. The plot was pretty straight forward and took place in the lovely place of Scotia. I enjoyed the little magical twists Danann threw into the story. I always enjoy seeing how other people view magic or other paranormals.

The reader is reading from an omniscient point of view which throws a lot at the reader who hasn't known these characters for very long. It's not overwhelming but I felt like there was a lack of mystery or something for the reader to figure out for themselves. We were in several heads but I felt as if I were told more than shown in some aspects which I suppose is ok considering this is a novella. Still I think it could have been better executed and some of it was unnecessary.

I liked Liulf well enough but I couldn't find myself liking Rain Falling too much. I wasn't pleased with her easy change of heart as much even if it sort of made sense to me. I felt like it was too easy and too soon. I wasn't sure what the purpose of the third brother in this story but I assume he's more involved in a larger part of a story that I haven't read yet.

There is a love scene near the end but I wouldn't call it too erotic. I had thought there would be more explicit material but it was more tame than I thought. Perhaps, I had higher hopes because of the cover. lol

Overall, this is a nice fast read which I recommend if you like werewolves, traveling, and people with awesome accents.
