Well, it took me two years. This book was not exciting. I'm officially done with the endless trials of Jamie and Claire as they shamble through time.

Wow!
I was as thrilled with this book as I have been with the others (well half of Dragonfly in Amber which I’ve already discussed in that review so won’t drag it up here).
I was so worried when I read some of the reviews that I was going to fall out of love with the characters or worse become bored with the story! We all know the tv shows they flog to death trying to churn out money rather then good stories (sex and the city I’m looking at you).
But this couldn’t have been further from the truth.
Jamie and Claire are completely different people from who they where when they where younger and that is fine by me! I’m not the same as I was now at nearly 30 as I was when I was 18. I’m sure if I met some of the people I knew back then they would say the same. This character progression is invigorating and completely real.
Jamie is in a country which is completely foreign to him with nothing. This is a guy who used to own an estate and take care of his tenants. He now has to cleave a new life out for himself. It would be daunting enough in these days to pack up your life and move abroad but imagine leaving everything and everyone you know forever without any hope of seeing them again or even having regular communication with them. Especially as that might not have been the path of your choosing. I like the softening of Jamie as he’s aged. The events at the beginning of the book are not so unbelievable to me considering his history with the British army and justice. That compassion has consequences though which haunt Jamie throughout the book, some good and some horrific.
Bree is an interesting character. She’s hot headed like Jamie but coming from an era where the boundaries of female and male roles are being challenged and dismantled into a very ridged system would be as Alien as me trying to live on the moon. Claire was able to figure this out better being born at the turn of the century so remembering those roles as societal norms still. I also don’t think she truly believed she was in any danger to begin with and instead had a cruel shock. I often think it would be great to see how the past worked in real life but it was a dangerous place something completely unrecognisable to us now.
Roger is an interesting character and I can’t wait to see more of him during the next books.
I thoroughly recommend this book. I’m also really enjoying finding out more about why Claire was able to time travel.
Please don’t be put off by the poor reviews which for some reason seem to be the most popular! I’ve seen it mentioned on twitter that Amazon weighs poor reviews more heavily then good ones so perhaps that’s starting to leak into Goodreads now which is a shame as this book series is one of the best ones I’ve read!

I enjoyed this book a lot. I loved getting to know Roger and Brianna better. The development of all the relationships was really well fleshed out. It did feel like it dragged on at time because it took place over so many years. I can’t wait to keep reading the series.

I just. Gah. I love these so much. So much happens and even though they’re long as hell I really do enjoy the ride. Also I just want to SQUISH my babies because they all deserve hugs

I just can't get enough of this series! Love the inclusion of more characters in this book, and how she makes complicated relationships okay and not everything works out perfectly easy.

Whenever I start a book in this series, I'm always a bit scared that I'm not going to like it as much as the previous ones. And just like always, that fear was for nothing, because Drums of Autums was really good. But I must admit that this book is probably my least favourite one in the series. It just felt even slower than the other books. I love Diana Gabaldon's detailed writing, but in the beginning, all those details weren't really that necessary for the book. Towards the end of however, I was captivated as much as I was by the other books and I loved every single line of this book. Drums of Autumn must be the biggest book I've ever read, but the more I got towards the end, the more I didn't want the book to end. Diana Gabaldon just keeps coming up with new story lines and new characters and they never bore me. I really loved Brianna and Roger's story. My one complaint however was that their relationship was a little too similar to that of Jamie and Claire. Anyway, I'm again very excited for the next book! I can't believe I have almost reached half of the book in this series!
