Leon writes just exactly what I want to read, time after time. So much of the appeal of her crime stories is that Brunetti spends his time noticing life, and unwrapping layers of the psyche of whomever the latest crime centers around, rather than chasing and arresting people. I close one of her books both unsettled and satisfied, every time. I hope she writes for many more years.

As Bertolt Brecht said, humankind is kept alive by bestial acts. Humans inhumanity to humans knows no bounds, and the denouement here is shocking. All evil does raise the question - are all humans bad? Look around you, and try to answer that question truthfully. It seems to me, and too often nowadays, that the world would be a better place without humans on it. Leon's writing is as light-touch as ever, and it's a mark of its quality that it makes the reader seriously consider these questions of philosophy and the human condition.

A rather sad story. The main characters remain the same

"Here he was again, assuming that what he thought was what other people must surely think; that his judgements must have universal validity. Lucretius knew that what is food to one man is bitter poison to another, a lesson life had been trying to teach Brunetti for a generation."

This is one of my favorite series, and each one gets better. Leon is so gifted at creating a living image of Venice and Brunetti. And the food!-I will have to read Brunetti's Cookbook soon.
