Great ending. Neatly answered all those burning questions. I kinda wish she'd do another. The characters, although many, were relatable. There are very few series that sadden me when they're over, but I just loved Gaby.

HOLY SHIT THIS IS THE LAST BOOK NOOOOOOOOOOOO ><
At last, Gaby and Julian remember everything ... And it made everything very VERY complicated >< Rafa lied (at the same time, we can totally understand him !!) but Gaby therefore must make very hard choices ... And at the same time handle demon attacks and potential traitors in her own camp =)
A book that concluded perfectly this great series : a not super original but very great universe, teenagers as main characters (but who do not behave like teenagers full of dramas and stupid reactions !!) and to whom we totally get attached (Gaby, Rafa, Jude quite sure but Jason, Daisy, Ez, Zak etc.) and a perfect ending =D
I really hope the author will write another series =D

Once upon a time, angel books are a dime a dozen. And even though it’s been reinvented in every conceivable way known to man, it wasn’t long before I got over it. I can only stomach so much forbidden love between an angel and a human. Gabriel and Michael have been cannoned to within an inch of their lives that I could no longer tell whether or not they’re God’s or Lucifer’s instruments. So yeah. I was over it.

I’ve always been a fan of Aussie authors and their contemporary fiction so I’ve never really strayed from that genre. I was easily coerced to read Shadows back in 2012; the postage I paid was astronomical. But I had no regrets. In strange ways books find their way in your shelves, that’s how Shadows came into mine. I was full of cynism at first (along the lines of, not another angel book! ). But two chapters in, I knew I was going to have a life-long relationship with Paula Weston’s Rephaim series.

Before

Soon after their reunion, Gaby’s and Jude’s memories came back with a vengeance. Events that led them to how they were separated played out like a reel of film in Gaby’s forgotten life. Some revelations may be hard to stomach, but they’ll both be powerless to stop the onslaught. Ultimately, all they’re looking for is a way to live without the threat of a war that could end their existence. Along the way, they learned more about their parentage and the secrets Nathaniel and The Garrison has hidden from the sons and daughters of The Fallen.

This is the End

If you haven’t read these books yet, then I envy you. Not only because you’re about to discover a brilliant series whose main M.O. is to give readers heart palpitations, but because you will not have to wait for installments. Paula Weston knows how to reel her readers in, and depending on how you feel about cliffhangers, be warned that she is the reigning queen. Truth be told, I waited until Burn came out last year (Australian release) before I gave in and read Shimmer. I just couldn’t handle the wait.

Alas, all the books are here. This is the end of the line. It’s been four years since I discovered this series. Four years of waiting for answers. And the one thing that I dread the most was exactly as painful as I thought it would be. I wanted to know the wedge that created the separation between Gaby and Jude. I wanted to know why Rafa insisted that if Gaby knew the truth, she’ll hate him forever. Those answers were a little tough to read. But I persevered. I can’t believe this series happened in a span of a week! A series years in the making. Talk about painstaking plotting.

The Rephaim series filled me with hopeless dread. Each book gave relief but exacted a different kind of torture for another year. It is the kind of series any book lover could obsess about. Every single installment gives you a flavourful bite, but you’ll be ravenous for a bigger piece of the pie. And yet, even with my irrational fear and dread of reading the books, I couldn’t stop. Overall, I’m sad this series is over because I feel like their lives are just starting. I wouldn’t mind seeing them do banal things instead of kicking ass day in and day out.

Book #64 Read in 2016
Burn by Paula Weston

I did not realize that this was the fourth book in a YA paranormal series but there was enough background given and the book was well written enough that I did not feel as if I was missing anything. That being said, I will go back and read the first three books in this series. In this book, the last book, twins Gabe and Jude, half-human/half-angel, want to release the Fallen (their angelic fathers). Their memories, wiped away for the last year, come back to them and the two bring their fighting factions together for one hell of a battle. This book has action, romance, mystery and humor. A good series for high school readers and adults alike. I received a copy of this book from Amazon Vine in exchange for a honest review.

If you are a fan of superbly written, action-packed fiction with interesting, brilliantly flawed characters - look no further than Paula Weston's Rephaim series. This is a series you won't want to put down! Typically I don't like series concerning angels yet this series has changed my mind. Burn, the fourth and final book in this stunning series, contains all the fast-paced action and romantic intrigue of the previous installments with the added drama of a thrilling conclusion.

Everything has been leading up to this book and now Gaby remembers everything. The truth behind why she and her twin Jude can't remember a decade of their lives. The reasons for Rafa's strange behaviour towards her. And the part the young human girl with visions of the Rephaim has to play in the complicated history of the Angels and the Fallen.

What I love most about this series (apart from the incredibly wonderful Rafa) is the pacing. It is a mean feat to condense hundreds of years of Gaby's history and combine it with the present day happenings. It amazes me to think that the happenings of this series occur in less than a fortnight of real time. And yet - the flow of information, events and reminiscences - it works perfectly. As a reader you are always there in the moment with the characters and I always felt completely involved with the story.

As a concluding chapter to the series, Burn is great. All the unanswered questions about what lead Gaby, Jude, Rafa and the other Rephaim to their present is explained in ways which felt right. There's a lot of action and excitement with never a boring moment. The characters have all grown over the course of the novel and despite the real time passing being so short, their growth felt natural and believable.

Fans of Gaby and Rafa's complicated relationship have much to appreciate in Burn too. Paula Weston has written a wonderfully complex and messy love story. It's mature and manages to feel appropriate for the teenage characters Gaby believes them to be at the start yet also right for their century old souls.

Burn cements the Rephaim as one of my all-time favourite series. This is my go-to recommendation for people wanting something a little bit different. The main character is a fierce half-angel warrior who is also down to earth (quite literally). Despite the otherworldly problems Gaby faces, the emotions she experiences and challenges she faces feel real and relatable.

If you only read one angel series in your lifetime - let it be the Rephaim series. You will not be disappointed.

Many thanks to Text Publishing for the review copy.

“We go where you go, buddy,’ Rafa says. ‘That’s the way it’s always been, whether you like it or not.”

Okaaaaay!! The whole damn series was gooooodd! I really like all the characters ,like all of them even the shitty head Daniel. I liked the friendship ,siblings love and how they found families in each other. I love the plot twist and I hate the cliffhangers in the end of every book. Overall the whole series is amazing ,worth a read even though maybe you read other books about Fallen Angels and their children. I give the whole series a five star!!

You guys...just go read this.

Burn by Paula Weston is the final book in the Rephaim series and I have been waiting, waiting, waiting to get to read this book. I have loved it since Jaime told me about Shadows, book one. If you haven’t started this series (WHAT??) go get Shadows now. Then pick up the other three so you can read all of them back to back. For those that have not yet read this book, or potentially any of the others, you may not want to continue reading this review. I am going to do my best to not spoil anything but can’t promise anything.

Gaby’s story has been developed so well over the course of the first three books and diving into Burn, I was immediately pulled back into her world. I thought the way that Weston structured the story was perfect. Sometimes I struggle with the flipping back and forth in timelines only because tend to get invested in the timeline I’m reading and all of a sudden I have to adjust to another timeline. I didn’t find this to be a problem for me in Burn. Right from page one, Weston delivers a mix of the current state as well as all the backstory we were missing because Gabe was missing them so as it all comes back to her, we get to find out ALL THE THINGS!! No…I’m not telling you what but trust me, it was well worth the wait.

In this book we get the usual cast of characters – Rafa, Jude, Jason, Daisy, Maggie, Daniel, Nathaniel, and demons. There are a bunch more but I can’t list them all here. One of the things I have been waiting for throughout this series is more information and interaction with Semyaza and the rest of the fallen angels. The story comes together completely and we find out what Nathaniel was thinking when he did what he did and how they all ended up where they are in this book.

Since this is the final book I can’t say much about what actually happens but I will say that the growth I saw in all of the characters was fantastic. Gaby and Jude / Gaby and Rafa didn’t go back to hating each other when everything came back to them which I was super happy about. As Gaby realizes who she was when she was Gabe, she makes the decision to not be the person she was back then. Don’t get me wrong, she is still tough and smart and cares a lot about the people around her but she comes to realize her pride isn’t worth giving up her friends and family.

A good portion of this book, outside of the relationships, is the group preparing for the impending demon attack at Pan Beach. There is a ton of action and eventually fighting and I loved every minute of it.

While all the other books tended to leave me on a cliff at the end, this one wrapped everything up fantastically. All of the questions I had were answered and I had plenty of Gaby and Rafa swoons. I can’t say much else without potentially ruining everything but what I will say is that Weston did a wonderful job of keeping me interested in the series from the start of Shadows. I am absolutely going to be looking forward to what Weston writes next. If you like a story that includes mystery, fallen angels, swoons, friendships, and just a fantastic story, you should pick this series up immediately.
