This collection showcases poetry and comics that are seamlessly merged to create unique and purposeful graphic narratives. A variety of perspectives and experiences of womanhood and gender are showcased here, written and drawn by talented and esteemed people of different ages and backgrounds, all with important messages to impart to us, the reader.

While poetry interests me, I know little about it as an art form, so I did have difficulty interpreting meaning from some of the texts. The study guide at the end of the book was invaluable for me, as it allowed me to further my understanding and appreciation for what I had just read, and think more deeply about each piece.

I would recommend this anthology to other readers. Even if you're like me and aren't practiced at reading poetry, you will likely find words and images here that will strongly resonate with you.

This was such a creative work; I have never seen poetry and visual art combined in this way. There is such a huge amount of diversity not just in the author's identities, but the art styles, poetry forms, and subjects of each piece. I truly think there is a piece for everyone in here; my personal favorites were "Capitalism Ruins Everything, Including Witchcraft" and "Tapestry." A lot of the poems used very lyrical, free verse style poetry, which at times were hard to interpret (I imagine it would be especially hard for someone new to the genre), but they reiterate the poem without the drawing at the end of each section, and I think the study guides in the back are very helpful. Overall, I think this is a stunning piece of literature that I think is perfect for fans of poetry, visual arts, feminism, and the human experience.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Embodied is an illustrated poetry anthology created by a diverse collection of poets and artists. Created by LGBTQ, women and BIPOC to tell stories about sexuality, gender and shared life experiences.

I have never read an illustrated poetry anthology before, so this was a learning experience for me. There weren’t any poems that I did not like, but a few that I did not understand fully. However, the art helped push me in the right direction as well as reading the study guide at the back. And having the full poem after each entry was helpful to read each poem without the distraction of the art.

Reading these poems were like getting into the head of many diverse women, and often lines would stand out and surprise me with how much I can relate to the poem. I think there is a poem in here for anyone to experience and relate to.

The illustrations were beautiful and engaging, sometimes even pulling my attention away from the poetry. They covered intense concepts like miscarriage and sexual harassment. They were used perfectly to show the differences in tone and style between each poem while also following a common female-centric theme.

My favourite poems would be Good Bones by Maggie Smith, illustrated by Carola Borelli and Units and Increments by Shira Dentz, illustrated by Jessica Lynn.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advanced copy.
