I know a lot of people don’t like this book. However, I almost want to compare it to Catching Fire because I feel this book holds the same purpose that one did for the Hunger Games series; Catching Fire, in my opinion, was the book that brings important things into perspective for the series. This book was more about learning the horrors of the world the characters live in. This book was about learning about the new bloods and served its purpose for further some relationships as well. I really do feel for Mare in this book because I know the whole journey she struggles with wanting to be a leader but also feeling like she is not qualified and that she is fooling herself; not to mention she struggles with where her heart is which is a whole war in itself.

Love this series and can’t wait to see what Victoria Aveyard has in store for King’s Cage!

A fast paced journey of Mare as she found her purpose and fought for it. This is a full action pack from the beginning till the end

The plot can be reduced to: find the new bloods, form an army, end on a cliffhanger.

I liked Red Queen. I really did. Mare was a tolerable first person protagonist, and Maven's character arc was incredible.

However, in this book I wanted to get straight out of Mare's head. The amount of internal dialoguing was insufferable. Maven may be the only character left that I care anything about at this point, but he was absent for the majority of the story.

So many words. So so boring. I'm hoping I can chalk it up to second book syndrome because it just felt like Aveyard was fighting to make her word count quota. The tell was too much tell, and the show was way too showy. The over descriptions bordered on purple.

I'm giving myself a break before I tackle the next installment. I might be a masochist, but they ended with Maven so I will soldier on soon enough. May the odds be ever in my favor.

Listen, trauma changes people, but my god does Mare change and not in a good way. Obviously it’s part of her character arc and it’s meant to cause pain, but watching her make all the wrong moves and push away those she loves? It hurts to see. On to the next book!

The beginning and ending of the book kept me engaged, but the middle dragged on. I also find the main character annoying at times and selfish. She seems self aware of it at times but does not much to improve it. I guess the ending was supposed to improve that notion so we will see how book 3 goes.
