If you love detectives slash serial killer thrillers slash police procedurals and you're not yet familiar with Pierre Lemaitre, then here's one for your wishlist. If you already read a number of classic murder novels; great. Chances are that you'll find a few of them in this policier, because the killer of this story loves to copy murders from some of those big titles. I actually recognized one of them before the insp.. Eh, commandant does. Camille Verhoeven is his name and what he lacks in size, he makes up in character. It's not difficult to foresee where things will eventually lead to, but the road to and the ending itself make this, imho, a must-read for fans of the genre(s). Pierre Lemaitre is something else.

Very gruesome and very boring as well. I don’t see what being gruesome adds to this story. I think some of the best works everything flows and has a purpose in the work, but in this book I was utterly confused as to what it adds. The writing it self really at times felt flat. This happened then this happened, it really lacked a flow. Eh what a waste of time I couldn’t even get to 100 pages in

The book flows really well and it's impossible to put down... I didn't particularly enjoy the writing style, which I felt was a bit clunky (the Italian translation). Camille is a very interesting protagonist, and I loved Louis.

The finale...

Patutlah orang kata siri ni padu! Aku suka gila dinamik tim polis nya: cekap & pantas!

Penjahat pun ikut naik sama.

I finally got around to it. ‘Irene’ has lots to commend it. It’s fast paced, interesting , has lots of twists and turns, and has a really really good ending. On the negative side, I find Lemaitre’s writing is just so rushed. There is so little reflection or attention to feelings. We are just given ‘the story’, and even the few chapters given over to his relationship with Irene and the child just seem out of place in this hard boiled thriller. I just wonder how much better it might have been there had been more focus on emotions and a closer examination of that relationship in the story.
