A striking review of the history of the world in the colonial (and post-colonial) era through the lens of the British Empire's treatment of India.

While avoiding dogmatic tribalistic disdain for anything associated with the British, Shashi Tharoor calmly dismantles every argument in favour of the Empire having been a positive influence on India or the world. The closing chapter offers insights on the state of the post-colonial world today.

Read it.

I listened to the audiobook in his own voice and I'm glad for it, ymmv.

The closing line slays.
"In looking to understand the forces that have made us and nearly unmade us, and in hoping to recognize possible future sources of conflict in the new millennium, we have to realize that sometimes the best crystal ball is a rearview mirror."
