On the surface Ender's Game a wonderfully fast paced and exciting sci-fi read. If you dig a little deeper it digs into our roles in society, what it means to be at war, and ultimately the value of human life. Absolutely worth a read.

This is a cool book to teach; you can do so much with it. Not only does Ender's Game introduce the idea that humans are NOT necessarily the smartest species out there, it also allows for discussions about how technology has changed over the decades and the effect that birth order has on an individual.

As is true of most sci-fi, characterization is not the main focus of the novel. However, Orson Scott Card does a decent job of creating dynamic characters. As readers, we become invested in Ender and sympathetic to his struggles. Dink is likable from the start, Bean quickly becomes a favorite, Alai is incredibly sweet, and Petra holds her own. The only reason I'm not giving Ender's Game five stars is because I often get bored reading about Peter and Valentine. I understand that the whole Locke-and-Demosthenese thing is important, but I don't really enjoy those chapters. I DO enjoy Valentine quite a bit. Peter, on the other hand, is despicable enough to run with Amy and Nick Dunne from Gone Girl (who, in my opinion, are two of the most loathsome literary characters of all time).

Ender's Game is good, though; you should read it.

This book is terrible, but I am obviously in the minority with that opinion. I cannot for the life of me figure out how it got such a high rating.
