Fantastic read. Melancholic, but one of those reads that make you deeply question your life and its choices. It's about butlers and English house servants (and thus something completely alien to me), but I can't help but draw parallels to my own life and career. I can see why this one is an easy favorite for a lot of people... it's the kind of book worth studying and discussing at length about.

Excellent prose, a story about a butler reflecting on his life

Perhaps then, there is something more to his advice that I should cease looking back and make the best of what remains of the day

There’s a kind of inherent, tragic, beauty, in people clinging  to a past that no longer exists in the present — it reminded me almost of Gustav, from the Grand Budapest Hotel. There’s a bravery in looking progress in the eye and saying no, i think not. This book is a wonderful character study, and the emotions it conjures are every real — there’s something to be said for the pain of regret, for the loss of what could have been. Always love a good Ishiguro.

Would have been a DNF if not for it being a book club book. Did not love the narration style or the main character. Half the time I was confused what was happening and the other half to me was boring and uneventful. I do love the author and his other books, this one was just not for me.
