This is book two of the Midlife Magic and Mates series and the main characters are Molly and her fated mate and wolf shifter alpha Ryker Davis, as well as her three best friends Ali, Steph and Missy. The four friends have suddenly come into their magical powers, apparently from ancestors who were witches persecuted in the Salem Witch Trials. At the end of the first book, Molly gets news that she thought was impossible and caused her to leave her first husband. She can’t tell Ryker about her surprise and Essie, their magic mentor and a very old witch, warns her that it is unlikely to work out, no matter how much she wishes for it, due to the complications between shifters and witches! Ryker has enemies amongst the supernatural beings he controls in Ashpoint and one of them is causing a lot of issues for Molly and her new gym. They want to divide Molly and Ryker and cause a war between witches and shifters, proving how shifters can’t trust witches like Molly and her friends.
Molly pushes Ryker away, to try and stop him having issues with those in his pack and to stop his people blaming him for too much interaction with the coven and ignoring his own people and their needs. Greta has become an even more dangerous foe to the four new witches, practising dark magic and wanting to take the power they have inherited for herself, to become even more powerful. She has played Molly and Steph against their best friends Ali and Missy, using the difference in their magical abilities to try and drive a wedge between them. Whether it is Greta or Ryker’s cousin who are causing all the attacks and denial of service against Molly and her friends, is unclear and difficult to fight against. Ryker has no proof of who is responsible within his pack and it seems even those closest to him have issues with him being so close to Molly and being part of training the others. Ali and Missy finally get their powers, with one able to heal and the other able to bring the dead back to life. They are all getting stronger, but Molly has been neglecting her classes and her training for obvious reasons, but that won’t help when the prophecy breaks!
Molly has someone else to care for and worry about, and she will do everything she can to protect them. But she may have to allow Ryker back in to help her, being the only person who can assist her when her heart is torn out and she is desperate. Steph has come back from her art exhibition tour, just in time for a massive faceoff between a large number of Greta’s coven, shifters and the four friends. The four friends are stronger together and surprise themselves with their abilities and spells they can come up with. Molly may have pushed Ryker away for the safety of their own destiny and his legacy of his family, but it seems that has not stopped their enemies from trying to take them down. They will face their biggest challenge in a cliffhanger at the end, just as they thought they were finally able to accept their mate bond and bring their kind together. How much interference there is from Greta in this challenge from so far away, is unclear and I will have to wait for the next book to find out. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Realism mixed with fantasy, this series had a decent balance. Four best friends discover they are witches and part of a hidden world. Fated to fight unseen forces, they have to manage their normal lives and new.

At first I did not think I would enjoy this series. It moved very quickly and I was concerned the entire series would feel rushed. I had my moments of doubt but overall, it was enjoyable.

All books follow the same main plot, but the character focus shifts into different sub plots. If you enjoy different point of views this is for you. The first three books focus on Molly. Books four through six focus on the second witch Stephanie. Book seven is Missy and book eight is Ali.

I would recommend this series for a quick read.
