“i wouldn’t just kill for kyrie—i would give my life. hell, i’d even let her take it.”

the separation between memories and real life is a little unclear, and i was unsure as to whether or not i’d finish this book after the first few chapters. however, i am so very glad i did. kyrie is a more developed character as her characterisation relates to her past, whereas jack isn’t as thoroughly developed. i loved the cat and mouse game that they played and how all of their pieces fell together in the end. definitely looking forward to reading more books by these authors!

i’m having the hardest time trying to rate this book. on the one hand, for the plot and development of the story? i would easily give it a 4.5. on the other hand, the smut alone gets a 1-star rating. as much as i loved how the story unraveled, how the characters’ relationship developed, and how their pasts were revealed, and watching the way everything fell into place, it’s something i’d want to recommend.

TWO RIVAL SERIAL KILLERS? C’MON, HOW COULD I NOT BE INTRIGUED??

but they fucked in a dead guy’s blood AND next to his body. and it’s disconcerting, especially since it happened twice 🥴
i knew going in that this wasn’t going to be a sweetheart read that i could breeze through, i knew there would be gore and violence, and these characters aren’t outstanding people, but Jesus FUCK the smut was depraved. not like i was reading it for the smut anyways, but there was a point when i felt things escalating sexually i just skimmed until i was past it because i didn’t want another fucking jump-scare.

Kyrie and Jack’s story was GRIPPING! i love how they toyed with each other, their characterizations were remarkably detailed,
and i loved the emphasis on the color of Kyrie’s eyes.
i liked their games and the way the story unfolded which is why i’m pissed i had to bypass
them fucking in blood next to a dead body
just to get through the story.

i have friends i know would love the Crime and Murder aspect of this and their work within their facility, but i won’t recommend this simply because i don’t want them to tweak out on me about the smut scenes.

“Dexter” is one of my favorite TV shows (minus the last season) and I love co-author Brynne’s book, “Butcher and Blackbird” a lot, so I decided to give this one a shot despite the TW.

The parts that I enjoyed the most were directly related to the cat and mouse games between the main characters and the bigger threat at play. I had a harder time with main characters’ relationship pivoting/evolving. It seemed really abrupt at first and kind of shocking? To then have it be tender within days also seemed… unrealistic of both their personalities consider the walls they both had built.

This book is not for the faint hearted. It is NOT like butcher & blackbird with the exception that it is a story about two rival serial unalivers who happen to fall for each other. This book takes every gorey & graphic detail to the extreme. It is violent, gorey and detailed. The authors don't shy away from how depraved the characters are. The trigger warnings are real and you should definitely abide by them.

That being said, I think going into this book with the correct expectations is going to make or break your experience. If you are looking for some psychotic serial unalivers that are academic enemies & end up equally psychotic lovers, and enjoy the nitty gritty details of how they unalived their vics & got away with it, this is for you.
