Bad Bye, Good Bye by Deborah Underwood, Jonathan Bean

A really nice book about a family's journey to a new home in a new town. The rhymes and two simple words on each page make the story accessible for toddlers. Jonathan Bean's detailed illustrations might be enough to keep an older child's attention. In the family's little red car, each passenger always has an emotion. Movement and speed are shown with an intentionally blurry background.

I really liked Jonathan Bean's illustrations in other books (especially Building Our House), but I wasn't really feeling the art here. It was a little too busy and chaotic, though in a sense I suppose it captures the nightmare of moving. Some of the rhymes were a bit forced too.

The simplicity of the text, in rhyming couplets, is enhanced by charming illustrations highlighting the emotions that go along with the events in this story of a boy whose family is moving to another state.

Bad Bye, Good Bye by Deborah Underwood is the story of a little kid moving away from his house to a new town. The good bye to him seemed more like a bad bye, and he didn't want to move. When he did move though, he found out that there are a lot of good things about his new town too! I personally liked this book, and I really liked the illustrations. I think this story is important to show children that the things that they might be nervous about aren't always as bad as they might seem. I feel like this book would be good to use to teach children that even though change is hard sometimes, it can lead to a lot of fun things.
