Author did a good job of making this book accessible to general tweens and teens, not just horse crazy kids. Terminology specific to the sport is briefly explained and is not overwhelming in the amount.

A solid MG nonfiction for about 4th through 6th/7th graders. Fans of horses and horse-racing will be fascinated. I was bored to tears because I'm not a horse fan, BUT I still felt this was a solid nonfic read with great detail about horse breeding history, and the life story of the jockey who rode and the owner of American Pharaoh.

I'm not really a reader of "horse books," but this book was given to me to read for an upcoming blog post on animals that I'm working on. I have to say, this is a GREAT story and Mickle hooked me in to this nonfiction account of American Pharaoh and the people who helped him achieve his amazing Triple Crown victory! Excellent backmatter as well.
