4.5 stars. Perhaps it is the theater person in me, but I really enjoyed this book. It was hard to put down, and I found myself really caring about the characters.

A new favourite read for sure. I don't even know if I can put into words how this book made me feel. It was so well written and so well portrayed, just a really fantastic read.

I was a little apprehensive about this book because I unfortunately did not like THE NEST.
But this book exceeded my expectations.

This is a story about two families.
A look at their beginnings, the ups and downs, the secrets and regrets.
It seems as though everyone is chasing the high from one magical summer, and while trying to hold onto that feeling they are slowly learning to accept that lives change, friendships change and marriages change.

Just meh feelings… I didn’t really connect with any of the characters and felt a lot of them were whiney and self-centered. Scenes came alive for me more than the characters.
It did make me think which is something.. What would *I do in some of the situations? How would I move forward after learning something that left me so betrayed? But still.. just meh.
The ending left me hanging.. I know it works for some readers, but I want to end a book with resolution of all the drama/trauma/ problems…

I enjoyed this book a lot, the different perspectives (love Ruby, although she only appears here and there) and time jumps.
Also how the mystery unraveled bit by bit, and the descriptions of theater life in NYC, and the tv world in LA added an interesting aspect to the story.

I liked the layered characters of Flora and Margot.

All in all a story about love, family, friendship, privilege, ambitions, betrayal and trust.

There is no perfect life for anybody

This novel spotlights two middle-aged couples who have been friends for decades, brought together by Julian's theater company, Good Company. None of them seem very happy; they have all left New York and the theater company behind to pursue careers in Los Angeles. Flora, married to Julian, finds the wedding ring he supposedly lost one summer years ago when she's looking for a photo from that same summer to give as a high school graduation gift to their daughter Ruby. When it turns out that Margot, Flora's best friend, knew about Julian's affair, Flora has to ask herself a lot of questions about both marriage and friendship. Meanwhile Margot is coping with the stress of having her long-time TV series character written off the show, and questioning her marriage to David, whose stroke years ago changed their lives forever. It's an interesting book, and I like the time of life that it explores. I would probably read another by this author.
